A Northwest brew pub, a historic house, trouble with the local American Indian community, and unexpected attention from the biggest country music star ever to come out of Nashville. It's going to be a tough summer for Bess in the free-thinking, left-leaning, soy-eating, fish-loving town of Port Heron.
American mythologies collide in a novel that's part love story, part modern politics, and part historical saga. Sharply observed but big-hearted, it's also a whole lot of fun.
The Indian Shirt Story eBook Heather Lockman
Small-town historians, cranky old ladies, helicopter parents, and country music singers are easy pickings for caricaturists. What's much harder is to write about them in a way that is keenly observed, yet compassionate. That's exactly what Heather Lockman has done in this wry and wonderful novel. She understands the inner lives of her characters, and while she conveys the humor--and even absurdity--of their quirks, she writes about them respectfully, digging past stereotypes to show us their humanity. The result is a book that, unlikely many contemporary novels, is filled with characters readers will care about and identify with. And although any lover of literary fiction will relish this book, The Indian Shirt Story is also a welcome and needed addition to Pacific Northwest literature. For those of us fortunate enough to live here, it's a reminder of what makes this place special and worth caring for. Lockman is no velvet-rope historian: she has no wish for things to revert to the mythical days of yore. She is clear-eyed about history's flaws and foibles in a way reminiscent of Timothy Egan's writings on subjects like the Dust Bowl and Theodore Roosevelt, and the eponymous Indian shirt story illustrates this beautifully. Her deep affection for everyday people and the place and time they inhabit shimmers on every page of this warmhearted novel.

The Indian Shirt Story eBook Heather Lockman Reviews
This was an interesting book with some surprising twists. It appealed to me because it was written by a local author and is loosely based on the city and native tribes near us, as well as having historical significance. It was well written and should appeal to a wide audience. I'd recommend it to friends and family..
In my opinion this story had just the right blend of history, humor, and romance. I don'[t usually enjoy romances, but Lockman so carefully and cleverly crafted the story and built the relationships of the characters, I was completely taken in. For me, it was almost tangible and believable
I bought this book because the author is local and she made a presentation at our Daughters of the Pioneers meeting. I enjoyed how the main characters interacted with each other. I loved the way the various versions of the Indian shirt story were told from different sources. favorite character was Jimmy-Jay that's one smart man. it's a good read.
Several themes run concurrently through this story. Which is very much in keeping with the idea that one story has multiple interpretations. All characters are identifiable, meaning you can identify with them, crucial to liking almost any book. There are Indian racial issues discussed from many sides. The elderly and the generational divide. Surviving and appreciating a career choice and for that matter a life choice. The Country Music world and fan adoration. Protesters and their means of proliferation. All that plus a tender love story too! Just a marvelous read that you will not soon forget!
An avid reader, I too loved this book. The writing is lyrical, the characters are wonderful, and the blend of humor, affection, and bittersweet is a marvel. Ms. Lockman's ability to get us to fall in love with her characters reminds me of some of Kingsolver's wonderful books -- but her voice (indeed voices!) is all her own. Give yourself a gift, read this and tell your friends!
I read this book in one sitting. I appreciated the author's historical detail and the respect she paid to old family stories. I'm from this area and have visited the house twice, but now I want to go back and see it through different eyes. The personal story of Bess was touching. In fact, all the interpersonal relationships were complicated, yet realistic.
Very quickly into the story I cared about the characters, and I really didn't want the story to end. I recommend this book to people who like history, local flavor, and yes, a bit of sexual tension.
The more I read this novel, the more I enjoyed it. Having lived in the northwest all my life, I found the settings, people, and circumstances really believable. The characters were amusing, complex, realistic, and extrememly likeable and I found myself wanting to know them and hoping that they'd be successful in their endeavors. The author has a very natural writing style that shows a mastery for story telling which rings true. As she weaves in the "Indian shirt story" from different perspectives throughout the novel, the reader learns more about the main characters from a variety of time periods in history. The country music star who has come to this small northwestern town and changed everyone's life is wonderful - good looking, kind, talented, sexy, smart, and almost impossible to resist. I found myself listening to some of my old country music CDs and picturing him making his music video on the grounds of the historic museum that is the central setting of the novel. I highly recommend this novel and don't be surprised if you shed a tear and many laughs throughout the reading.
